A 55-year-old woman presents to her physician with a six-month history of mouth soreness. She describes a persistent burning sensation. It is made worse by spicy or acidic foods. Initially, she noticed a painless, lace-like white pattern on the inside of her cheeks. Over the past three months, this has evolved into painful, raw-feeling areas. She denies any new skin lesions, rashes, or genital discomfort. Her past medical history is notable for well-controlled hypothyroidism, for which she takes levothyroxine. She is under significant personal stress recently. She does not use tobacco products and drinks alcohol socially. Her dental hygiene is good.
